Subject: In Your Face?

I've just read this article about a Facebook economy emerging.

What's that?

Well, it's a whole new business community starting, based on writing widgets (applications) that are plugged into facebook.com (and other social networking sites).

For example, check out SocialMedia which is a social network for developers who want to write applications that work within MySpace, Facebook, etc. You build, they host and take it to market.

You get your 'business' into people's faces. Easy as that.

Is it just me that finds this birth of new business fascinating? I meant it. Truly interesting. We are working in an industry that itself is only just in double figures in years, which in itself is great, but now we are seeing new landscapes, new ways of communication grow, pioneering stuff. OK, maybe not that original, but it's great seeing how people can take something truly ingenious and make a buck from it.

I love metaphors me (all who know me will agree). I've always likened the birth of the internet as something akin to the manifest destiny of the pioneers in the USA. Some pioneers struck gold, some planted farms, some died along the way. Taking this metaphor a step further, seeing MySpace, et al. grow is like witnessing the founding of San Francisco, or New York and now, seeing this new economy emerge within these social networks is like seeing the birth of FedEx, or AT&T... Isn't it?

Maybe it's just me then. But watch this space... I may be in your face soon.
