This time a couple of years ago we hadn't even considered interacting with games other than via our hands (keyboard 'n mouse, game controller, steering wheels, etc.) then along came the Wii and the world nunchucked, stepped, danced, bowled and batted it's way into a new era of game interaction. Today it seems like such old technology doesn't it?
Well, this time next year we'll be saying the same about brain powered games, especially if the clever folk from Neurosky have anything to say. They are experts in EEG (medical brainwave scanning thing-a-my-gig) technology and have a must for all wannabe Jedi Knights: it's a Force Trainer that sort of works like that scene in one of the films where young Skywhomper was blindfolded and tried to hit a floating ball with a stick or something, though to be honest looks more like a ping-pong ball in a hamster tunnel.
Another game, this time brought to us from super toy makers Mattel, the Mind Flex
seems to be another ping pong ball derived game, but this time on a
hamster assault course. Control the ball through a maze of loops and
hoops with just your mind power...
The one to lead the pack in my mind (no pun) though is Emotiv's EPOC
headset, which already has real world applications with things like
controlling electric wheelchairs, but which is planned for this year to
be 'the' remote game controller to have. It will read brainwaves (alpha
waves), facial expressions and body movement to produce some
interesting ways of controlling games. And there's no hamsters or ping
pong balls in sight!
