I went out for a coffee and while I was out the InterWeb changed. On my return I found my skill-set was now redundant and that I had to upgrade, download, retrain and generally run at full speed just to keep abreast of everything. Before I left it was all talk of java being great and on my return it was now about how caffeine didn't work. I was only gone for 10 minutes...
The danger of working within 'new' media is that the new has a seemingly blind urge to constantly move forward. Once you, as user of the media, get to that point and say 'I have it!' you find that 'it' has since moved on and what you have is outdated, last generation and so 'yesterday'. However, luckily for us there's a part of our makeup (probably a remnant from our hunter gatherer days) that loves a chase and part of the fun of new media is the hunt for it.
Every now and again though we need to take a break. Pop out for a coffee. But when we do that we have to accept that things will progress forward without us, that before the coffee it was all about Java and afterwards it's all about Caffeine.
As long as we accept that we will always be living in the shadow of the 'new' we can enjoy our breaks with immunity.
