Over the Christmas break I was able to witness the latest hatchling from James Cameron when I saw Avatar in 3D.
3D appears to be cinemas answer to video piracy at the moment. It seems like a no brainer that the cinema should use killer apps like 3D vision and surround sound to compete with movies being downloaded illegally and watched on a 3 inch screen - if it works.
Movie goers seem to be giving it a try. Avatar has become one of the highest grossing movies over the Christmas period - due in no small part to the fact that ticket prices get hiked if you get a pair of 'free' specs to strap on your face in order for your eyes to make sense of the fuzzy image up on screen. I think I paid an extra £2.50 for a 3D ticket and I'm afraid I didnt feel quite 'green' enough to give the glasses back (they are now sitting on my sons dressing up basket).
If you havent seen anything in 3D yet I'd say its worth giving it a try, it does work to some extent to give the impression of depth in the screen but it also seems to make everything glimmery, with a kind of outlandish quality. Unfortunately its bound to lead to a number of gimmicky movies too - where objects are suddenly thrust towards the camera lens for no reason.
One cool effect I did notice though.. If you turn around during the movie you get the strange
impression that you are surrounded by a room full of Jackie O's and Roy
Orbisons staring at the silver screen.
Sadly you wouldnt get this effect at home. Yes during 2010 it looks as if 3D is set to start coming to TVs and laptop near you. As well as Sky launching Sky 3D.
Offering improved services to affect the consumers choice seems a preferred route to that being chosen in France where they have a less softly softly approach to internet piracy. You get two chances before you're in front of the judge to have your access rights denied.
With 3D laptops on the way I can look froward to designing my first 3D site later this year..
