I'm sure you are all already aware of this, but I only recently picked up on it. The future seems to be wireless. No, not just web connection. I mean powerlead-less. No wires!
There seem to be two kinds, the first being near field transfer, basically there's a short distance between the charging and charger points. The primary method is through induction: either electromagnetic or electrostatic. Confused? Well let the boffins from MIT tell you about wireless electricity then.
The second kind is far field transfer, involving radio, microwave and laser and successful tests of this method have been going on since the 70s. Who knew!
It's the near field stuff that will have a direct influence on our day to day usage of technologies in the next year or so. Imagine just walking into a wifi hotspot and having your mobile phone charge for you. It can happen today, they just need to roll out the tech to us.
Of course, they say nothing is 'new' and in this case that is true. It seems that over 100 years ago the famous scientist Nikola Tesla made statements that electricity could be transfered wirelessly.
Crazy? Not so. The brain works by synaptic connections - where electric connections are made jumping between two nerves. We've been wireless all along it seems! Yay us!
