Subject: The True Centre of the Web

Allegedly it’s the Sun. Or rather SUN mircrosystems. The news is that they are to acquire MySQL for a billion dollars.

According to Jonathan Swartz’s blog (the CEO of Sun,) they are ‘committed to the business model’ of MySQL (it’s free) and will only create future commercial services that attract [future] paying customers. So is this case of free entry before 10pm? What’s also interesting is that until ‘now no platform vendor has assembled all the core elements of a completely open source operating system for the internet [with this purchase they have] positioned Sun at the centre of the web.

I’m not going to focus on the huge sums of money being spent to purchase an open source (free) software, especially in the light of mega-sums being thrown at Yahoo! by Microsoft and then being turned down. Nor am I going to mention the fact that thousands of websites including Google, Facebook and even Yahoo! use MySQL. Nope.

I am however going to comment on the fact that the sun (big glowing version out your window) is pretty much at the centre of everything on the world too. This you know of course. You also know that while the sun is great, it can also burn you baby. Open source LAMP users out there should invest in some high factor cream just in case there’s a grandfathered payment clause slipped into usage of the ‘M’ when the summer comes.

But the true centre of the web? Is it really open source communities? The Sun? Microsoft? Or, perhaps it's the big bang buck?
