Subject: I will not upgrade

Do you sometimes find yourself so wrapped up in this technology game that to keep up you inadvertently break what was working just fine? I found out recently that upgrade does not always mean improvement. Hey, who am I kidding? Every time I upgrade something it breaks something else. Like recently...

I use an Apple Mac for work. I also use a Sony Ericsson W880i phone. I also use Microsoft Office. The three are not 'natively' compatible, not 'out of the box' anyway. In order to sync my calendars from my mac to my phone I had to buy a piece of software (MobileSync) that did the job. Or, it used to until...

I upgraded the Apple OS to Leopard (10.5.x)- MobileSync went a bit flakey, but there was a beta upgrade, this still kind of worked throwing up a ghost of the programme that failed while also running a version that worked every time I ran the software. Next I upgraded Microsoft Office to 2008. Now, completely up to date with software versions I find that I can no longer sync everything - MobileSync could no longer find the calendar it used to.

There was a glimmer of hope however; the new Office 'seamlessly' integrates with iCal, the 'native' calendar on the Mac, and there's iSync, again a native piece of software, that should sync iCal with your mobile phone. No joy though, as apparently my phone is not supported.

So I find myself with the latest stuff but apparently I'm too ahead of the game as nothing talks to each other any more. All dressed up and nowhere to go.

Then I found a little piece of scripting and in desperation I shoe horn an 'experimental' version of it into my brand new setup and I'm back in the game. Hurrah!

Now my Office calendar syncs with my Apple calendar which in turn syncs with my Apple sync software which now syncs with my mobile phone. I have a daisy chain of connections that mean I know when and where I'm supposed to be. In my head it's a scaffolding bridge of bamboo, swaying in the wind and bouncing dangerously whenever a bird flies too close. And I find myself repeating the mantra over and over again - I will not upgrade. I will not upgrade.
