Viral marketing describes a process that is typically short-lived, involving a spontaneous and, ideally, exponential sharing pattern. At the centre of this process is the mechanism or agent that is shared (a game, a video, an image, text etc.) using email, weblogs, and/or other modern forms of social networking.

While the initial effect (and audience) may be temporary, viral marketing can be used to generate inbound links to your site that are likely to create immediate and enduring improvements to your reputation and performance in search engines.
